Brochure title:
2016-2022 Research and Development Agenda Supporting the DOE Office of Environmental Management
Description:
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Environmental Management (EM) has made considerable progress cleaning up groundwater and soil contamination as well as radioactive wastes; however, significant challenges remain. Difficulty addressing these challenges often results in inefficient cleanup actions at a number of key sites, and cleaning up the nation’s nuclear weapons complex remains one of the most technologically challenging and expensive problems facing the EM program. Development of the nation’s nuclear arsenal left behind ~90 million gallons of high-level wastes and highly complex, radioactive mixed wastes that contaminate millions of cubic meters of soils and groundwater.
