Increasing the amount of Al in automobiles allows manufacturers to create lighter, more fuel efficient vehicles. A 10% reduction in weight can result in as much as 6% - 8% increase in fuel economy. But, until recently, the use of Al in trucks and cars has been limited by the inability to join Al sheets at production speeds and weld sheets of dissimilar thicknesses. As part of a three-year, DOE funded project, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) developed a new, high-production FSW technique 10x faster than pervious methods and capable of joining Al sheets of dissimilar thickness for tailored blanks. The technology was transferred to TWB Company, LLC, which provides automobile components to numerous automotive groups throughout the globe.
